Building a custom power pack: from request to delivery
Building a custom power pack starts with two numbers: the working pressure (bar) and the flow rate (l/min). From these you calculate the motor power you need: P (kW) = p (bar) × Q (l/min) / 540. For 210 bar and 5 l/min that is 210 × 5 / 540 = 1.9 kW. With these figures you can build your own unit in the power pack configurator, or contact us for a custom design. We build the units in our own workshop in Enschede, the Netherlands.
What is a hydraulic power pack?
A hydraulic power pack (also called a hydraulic power unit) is a self-contained power source for hydraulic systems. It mainly consists of a motor, a tank and a hydraulic pump. The motor drives the pump, and the pump draws oil from the tank and delivers it under pressure to the hydraulic system.
From request to delivery in 5 steps
1. Determine working pressure and flow rate
Work out what your application needs: the working pressure in bar and the flow rate in litres per minute. That gives you the power (see the formula above). If you already know the power, you can also enter it directly in the configurator.
2. Choose the drive
Choose a motor that suits where the unit will be used: 12V, 24V or 48V DC, 230V or 400V AC, or a petrol engine or diesel engine.
3. Configure or request a quote
In the power pack configurator you choose the motor, the type of unit (for example Mini Powerpack, Workshop, Motor+pump or Industrial), the pump, the tank, the pressure relief setting and the valves. You can download the hydraulic schematic with specifications, a 3D file and the manual. If your application does not fit the configurator, contact us. You can read more about custom units under Custom hydraulics.
4. Built in our workshop
Our hydraulic engineers design and build the units in our own workshop in Enschede, from small power packs to large hydraulic units.
5. Delivery or collection
We ship worldwide; shipping costs depend on the size of the product and the destination. For shipments outside Europe, please contact us first so we can quote the exact shipping costs. For custom systems we will let you know the delivery date. You can also collect your order at our desk at Lonnekerbrugstraat 102A in Enschede.
Calculating your power pack
| What | Formula | Example from the configurator |
|---|---|---|
| Required power | P (kW) = p (bar) × Q (l/min) / 540 | 210 bar × 5 l/min / 540 = 1.9 kW |
| Pump flow rate | Q (l/min) = displacement (cc) × speed (rpm) / 1000 | 3.2 cc × 1,500 / 1000 = 4.8 l/min |
| Maximum pressure for a motor | p (bar) = P (kW) × 540 / Q (l/min) | 2.2 kW × 540 / 4.8 l/min = 247.5 bar |
Which drive is right for you?
| Drive | Suitable for |
|---|---|
| 12V, 24V or 48V DC | Mobile applications running on a battery, for example trailers, vehicles and boats. |
| 230V or 400V AC | Fixed installations with mains power, for example in a workshop or machine. |
| Petrol engine | Mobile work without a power supply. |
| Diesel engine | Mobile work without a power supply, often for higher power. |
Frequently asked questions
How much power does my power pack need?
Multiply the working pressure (bar) by the flow rate (l/min) and divide by 540; the factor comes from 600 × 90% efficiency. Example: 210 bar × 5 l/min / 540 = 1.9 kW.
How do I calculate the pump flow rate?
Multiply the pump displacement (cc) by the motor speed (rpm) and divide by 1000. A 3.2 cc pump at 1,500 rpm delivers 4.8 l/min.
Can I have a power pack built to order?
Yes. Build it in the power pack configurator or contact us. We build it in our own workshop.
Do I get a hydraulic schematic with my power pack?
In the configurator you can download the hydraulic schematic with specifications, a 3D file and the manual (English and Dutch) for your configuration.
What is the difference between single acting and double acting?
In a single acting circuit the oil pushes the cylinder in one direction and it returns under the load or a spring. In a double acting circuit the oil moves the cylinder in both directions. You choose either option in the configurator.
Can I collect my power pack?
Yes. You can collect your order at our desk at Lonnekerbrugstraat 102A in Enschede, the Netherlands, Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 17:30.
You will find all ready-made units and parts under Power packs. Would you like personal advice? Contact us and our engineers will be happy to help.
